Modern access control for logistics and distribution centres provides streamlined, secure processes to protect property, people, and vehicles, via one integrated solution.

The size and complex layouts of 24-hour-operating logistics and distribution centres can pose a challenge for access control. With single or multiple buildings that experience endless vehicle movements and shift changes throughout the day, they are often filled with high-value stock and equipment, multiple vehicles, the fuel those vehicles use, and of course, staff. To keep property, people, and vehicles safe, having a reliable, real-time monitoring, access control and intrusion detection system is a must.

Logistics and distribution centres access control systems are cost-effective, convenient ways to protect your assets, offering the ability to vary the level of access for individual users. By prioritising security and access control, logistics and distribution centres can safeguard their operations, protect intellectual property, prevent theft, and maintain compliance with industry regulations. Approaches to managing access control systems have evolved. By moving from less secure local server setups to cloud-hosted systems, you can benefit from greater security and reliability, removing the need for onsite infrastructure management. Cloud-based access control is essential for logistics and distribution centres looking to futureproof their security infrastructure, mitigate potential risks, prevent unauthorised access, and protect valuable assets.

Door Entry Systems

Access control systems provide a vital security asset to 24/7 sites that are utilised by large numbers of people. Stand-alone access control is when all equipment required to secure a premises is within the doors. Access is granted via a predetermined code entered into a keypad, by scanning a card or fob, or by providing a biometric terminal.

Modern entry systems offer role-based access control, allowing different levels of access based on individual roles and responsibilities. By assigning specific access privileges, you can enforce strict security protocols to ensure access is only given to authorised personnel. Card or key fob access is common, inexpensive, and easy to use. Biometric readers require facial or fingerprint credentials to gain entry, making it virtually impossible for trespassers to gain unauthorised access, and a mobile credential is stored on an individual’s phone.

Mobile Access Control

Mobile devices have become an essential part of our everyday lives. Mobile credential access control is built with modern logistics and distribution centres in mind. Connected to a secure management dashboard, you can make rapid adjustments like reworking entry privileges, from anywhere at any time, for one site or many, via one cloud-based server.

Mobile access control allows devices like smartphones and smartwatches to be used instead of key cards or fobs. With an access control app, like Airfob Space, users simply tap their device, with the credential required, onto the reader at the door to gain access. Mobile access credentials are more secure than physical cards as you don’t run the risk of them being lost, stolen, or borrowed.

Gates, Barriers, and Turnstiles

Physical gates, barriers and turnstiles not only create a secure and intrinsically safe environment but are also a reliable solution to prevent unauthorised entry, whether placed inside or outside your logistics and distribution centre. Tripod turnstiles, full-height turnstiles, and speed gates or interlocking doors can all incorporate access cards or key fob readers, refusing entry to unauthorised personnel. Turnstiles with attendance tracking systems can record entry and exit times, helping to monitor patterns and evaluate your buildings usage.

VSS – Visual Surveillance Systems

Enhance your security with cutting-edge warehouse VSS systems that deliver high-resolution camera technology, provide crisp visuals and real-time remote monitoring. Highly visible, advanced VSS systems are a deterrent to even the most persistent criminals. It can be wireless, detect body temperature via infra-red technology, and be installed as a fixed or hard-wired solution at critical points around your premises, maintaining 24/7 surveillance. Integrated video surveillance and electronic security systems allow you to monitor and respond to potential threats in real time, as do intruder detection and alarm notifications that are instantly sent to your management dashboard.

Thermal Perimeter Protection

Thermal Perimeter Protection systems offer a solution to when security lighting is too low to provide a viable option for intruder detection, instead intruders can be detected via their body heat. Having this extra layer of protection for your site will not only provide a strong deterrent to potential threats, but it can also seamlessly integrate with alarm monitoring and police response, meaning when triggered, immediate alerts are generated, ensuring a rapid response and minimising potential damage or loss.

ANPR/LPR

Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), or Licence Plate Recognition (LPR), are automated forms of access control that allows pre-authorised vehicles to gain quick entry through a gate, barrier, shutter, or logistics/distribution centre door. Once the system is installed, an outward facing camera will scan approaching vehicle licence plates to determine whether to allow or deny entry. All logistics and distribution centre vehicles can be pre-entered into the system for a quick and easy approach to the entrance or exit. An intercom can also be installed to allow for guests or other vehicles to manually call security and gain access when required.

How cloud access control benefits logistics and distribution businesses

From knowing who is currently in the facility, the movements of staff and vehicles, to helping with altercations and limiting internal and external threats, your logistics and distribution centre can be managed a lot more efficiently with an access control system. A cloud access control solution provides an advanced level of physical security that allows you to remotely control and manage your warehouse with a single off-site server. Easily configure access permissions, track employee movement, generate reports, control doors, and set up different security parameters that allow varying levels of access, via an internet-connected device.

With logistics and distribution centres often working on behalf of multiple companies, the zonal control provided by an access control system will ensure only authorised individuals have access to the areas they need. Incidents such as failed authentication attempts, door forced/ajar, or entry into unauthorised zones will trigger alerts to your management dashboard. You can also monitor potential risks such as fires, trip hazards and flooding in real-time, improving the overall safety and efficiency of production.

If you already have a legacy door entry system in place, we can integrate and migrate your solution to the cloud. OLS Connect, our custom-built cloud-based integration platform, works with existing management systems, is fully customisable to your individual requirements, and works with both API and flat file integrations, allowing integration with time and attendance applications, roll call fire mustering and more.

Keypad Access

Keypad access provides a streamlined check-in process that allows users quick access to a facility, without the need for manual verification. With a code, entry and exit times can be tracked, providing valuable data on building and room usage patterns, roll call and fire mustering. This system can be programmed to disable for a certain amount of time when enough incorrect attempts of the code are entered. It can also alert the relevant authorities when suspicious activity is detected.

Intercom phone

Intercom Access

Intercoms provide a convenient way to grant authorised access, by allowing a means of two-way communication prior to entry. Flexible and cost-effective, intercoms can provide 24-hour access without using physical security. The system can be used both externally and internally. Unlike a key card or fob, intercoms allow you to vet a person before choosing whether to grant access.

ANPR/LPR

Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), or Licence Plate Recognition (LPR), scans a vehicle’s license plate as it pulls up to the entryway. If the number plate aligns with one of the pre-authorised vehicles logged in the system, access will be granted. If not, access will be denied. For guests or other vehicles wanting to gain access, they will have to use a call box to manually contact security.

Card Swipe

A key card or key fob is a security credential that you tap, swipe, or insert into a reader to grant or restrict access. Each card or fob holds unique user credentials with specific access permissions that must align with those logged in the database before access is granted. Cards and fobs can be used to open a range of doors, gates, barriers and even hangers.

Mobile access control

Mobile Credentials

A mobile-first access control solution utilises a user’s device – their smartphone or smartwatch – to hold a digital credential. When accessing the facility, users simply show their smart device to the reader. Mobile credentials provide convenience as they are stored on one’s phone which is always carried with them. It also reduces the risk of having lost and stolen key cards.

Biometric Access

One of the safest and most secure authentication methods available, biometric access uses unique biological features such as fingerprints, palms, irises, and faces to grant access, eliminating the issues suffered by cards, fobs and pin numbers that can be lost, stolen, or shared.

There are many benefits of logistics and distribution centre access control systems, the main being increased security. Other benefits include increased ease of access, the ability to track and monitor who enters and leaves your premises, and the prevention of unauthorised personnel from entering.

Logistics and distribution centre access control systems give you complete control over who enters your premises and/or specific areas within your building. A preconfigured door lock system is attached to your door that only allows entry when someone enters or scans the predetermined credentials (code, tag, ID card, biometric profile). They can also provide detailed reports on how users move about your building at the touch of a button.

Simple and easy to manage with training provided, our management systems provide ongoing cost savings on administration, due to its automated processes and single interface. You no longer need to manually input data onto multiple systems or spend time correcting errors. Everything will be available to you from anywhere at any time via the cloud, including time and attendance and roll call fire mustering. Having the ability to access your muster register via an app on your phone is much easier than registering thousands of people on a piece of paper. ID cards are scanned at specified muster points, automatically marking them as safe and out of the building.

Yes, cloud-based access control allows you to easily scale your business each time you expand to a new location, or your facilities and staff numbers increase. These systems can support you with potentially global growth, processing large numbers of users without having to install server boxes in every building like you would with traditional access control.

No, we provide an infrastructure survey to determine what needs upgrading and oftentimes, we can integrate our solutions with your current systems.
